John Richards

John was born in Hailsham, East Sussex, in 1934 which makes him the Elder Statesman of Skyline Gold! He moved to Bath in 1942 and it was two years later that his passion for big band music started whilst listening to the music of Glen Miller, Ambrose & Geraldo on the BBC Radio Wartime broadcasts.

He moved to Winchester in 1982 and joined the local hospital radio station three years later to present a weekly big band programme. This and the odd patient request show had him gracing their airwaves for the next twenty years. During that time, he was lucky enough to have interviewed personalities such as Helen Shapiro, Rosemary Squires, Don Lusher and the legendary American band leader, Ray Anthony.

He retired from Winchester Hospital Radio in December 2005. He thought that enough was enough, but missed presenting his beloved swing music and was lucky enough to be offered a spot on Skyline Community Radio. So, it came to pass in June 2006 that he stepped up to the microphone once again to present Swingtime weekly on Tuesday evening for an hour from 7pm.

John says, 'despite my age, I have to admit I love the buzz I get from presenting a live programme of big band music on steam radio!'.
